What Does an OmugwoCare Caregiver Do?

OmugwoCare caregivers support mothers and families during the postpartum period, particularly during the first 40 days after childbirth.
The role is practical, respectful, and mother-centered. Caregivers help create an environment where mothers can focus on rest, recovery, bonding with their newborn, and adjusting to life after birth.
Depending on the family's needs and the caregiver's approved scope, support may include meal preparation, light household assistance, companionship, family communication, visitor coordination, and other practical postpartum support.

Who can become an OmugwoCare Caregiver?

OmugwoCare is looking for people who are committed to supporting mothers and families with compassion,
respect, reliability, and professionalism.
Caregivers should be prepared to:

  • Respect the mother's preferences and family boundaries
  • Provide practical, non-medical postpartum support
  • Communicate clearly and respectfully with families
  • Protect family privacy and confidential information
  • Work within OmugwoCare's defined caregiver scope
  • Complete required screening and training
  • Follow OmugwoCare's safety, privacy, and quality expectations

Previous caregiving, family support, community support, hospitality, childcare, or related experience may
be relevant, depending on the role and OmugwoCare's requirements.

What Postpartum Caregivers May Support

Depending on the family's needs and the caregiver's approved scope, support may include:

  • Meal preparation
  • Hydration reminders
  • Light household help
  • Laundry
  • Dishes
  • Grocery support
  • Visitor management
  • Companionship
  • Family Care Circle coordination
  • Newborn transition support without medical advice
  • Appointment reminders without medical advice
  • Referral escalation to OmugwoCare staff when need falls outside the caregiver's scope

What Caregivers May Not Do

OmugwoCare caregivers provide non-medical support. They may not:

  • Provide medical advice
  • Diagnose or treat any condition
  • Provide nursing care
  • Provide therapy or mental health treatment
  • Provide clinical infant care
  • Administer medication
  • Make emergency decisions
  • Replace doctors, nurses, doulas, lactation consultants, therapists, hospitals, or licensed providers
  • Share private family information without authorization

When a situation falls outside the caregiver's role, caregivers are expected to follow OmugwoCare's escalation and referral procedures.

Caregiver Screening and Training

OmugwoCare is committed to connecting families with caregivers who are prepared to provide safe, respectful, and reliable non-medical support.
Depending on the role and program requirements, caregiver applicants may be asked to complete:
